With the delivery of the first state-of-the-art Airbus A220 at the end of 2024, the Czech Republic’s Smartwings is breathing new life into renowned CSA. The sub-fleet, initially comprising four aircraft, will continue to fly in CSA colors, even if it will only be continued as a brand, rather than an independent airline: purchased by Smartwings in 2018, CSA ceased flight operations in October 2024, 101 years after its founding. The legendary IATA code “OK” thus became history. Smartwings previously operated a fleet consisting solely of Boeing 737-800s and 737 Max 8s. The Airbus A220, originally developed as the CSeries by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier, is known for its fuel efficiency, comfort and flexibility on short and medium-haul flights. With a capacity of up to 160 passengers in a typical two-class configuration, it is ideal for routes where the larger Boeing 737s would be unprofitable.
